The video compression gurus at Sorenson look to extend their offerings beyond the application to delivery.

Sorenson 360 offers an in-demand service, video hosting. The company introduced hosting in multiple video formats, such as MPEG-4 and Flash and using a standard Web browser for uploading. The full compatible listing includes AAC , HE-AAC, AIFF, ASF, AVI, DV, MOV, MP3, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, WAV, WMA, and WMV. Data rates of to 1-Mbps are supported. On the viewer end, users will watch your video in either FLV using Spark and VP6 and MP4 with H.264.

The concept appears to simply be for users compress your video for Internet distribution as you usually do, presumable ideally using a Sorenson codec, and then it has a home on paid hosting.

“Crisp, vivid video is one of the most powerful tools for engaging people on the Internet today, but until now no company has offered a high-quality, full-service solution at a compelling price,” says Peter Csathy, Sorenson Media CEO. “Sorenson 360 re-imagines what video publishing should be and is a game changer. The power of a high-quality, easy-to-use, all-in-one video solution is now finally available to anyone; and it comes from a name and company that video professionals know and trust.”

The system will allow users to embed videos into any supporting Web content, such has home pages, blogs, etc. The system also supports statistic and management tools. The service starts out at $99 for up to 2,500 streams per month of 10 GB of total storage with larger and custom packages available. The big question is how the service will compare with free services, such as YouTube, Vimeo, and an assortment of others. For professionals looking to own their content, however, this could be a particular deal. The big question will be support and uptime. The company offers a 30-day trial to give it a spin.
