Back in the day, analog encoding was a major undertaking. Today, you just need a USB 2.0 port. This week Roxio announced Easy VHS to DVD, which offers a simple solution for all those old family movies on tape. The product name states VHS, but really any analog format is accepted such as Hi-8, so long as you still have a camera or deck capable of playing. "Whether it is weddings, baby's first steps, reunions, or other irreplaceable family memories, it is only a matter of time before the aging footage stored on analog video tape is lost forever," said Vito Salvaggio, vice president of consumer products, Roxio. "We've introduced Roxio Easy VHS to DVD for Mac, to make it extremely easy for families to revive and rediscover memorable family milestones and preserve them for generations to come." The device included a USB 2.0 encoder with breakout cables for composite RCA-style video and component S-Video, in addition to stereo RCA audio jacks. Media is recorded to the Mac hard drive, and then can be brought to iMovie for further editing. Finally, the video can be burned to DVD in Toast, or exported to iDVD for further authoring. Or, if the final destination isn't even DVD, this works too using your software tools of choice, such as iTunes or QuickTime Pro for Web, iPods, and iPhones. The package includes a copy of Toast 9 Basic. Easy VHS to DVD has a suggest retail price of $79.99. It requires a dual processor G5 or any Intel-based Mac and goes down to Mac OS 10.4. It doesn't hurt to also have lots of drive space for your storage, Roxio recommends 15 GB. Roxio Easy VHS to DVD ![]()
