Apple releases Final Cut Studio 3

Release includes new Final Cut Pro 7, Motion 4, Soundtrack Pro 3, Color 1.5 and Compressor 3.5

After well over 2 years, Apple has finally cut loose a major update to its popular video editing suit. Final Cut Studio includes over 100 new features and a price cut.

“With 1.4 million users and 50 percent of the market,* Final Cut Pro is the number one professional video editing application,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The new Final Cut Studio includes more than 100 new features and dramatically expands Apple’s ProRes family of codecs so editors can work in the studio with the highest quality video or on location at low bandwidths.”

At the center of the studio is Final Cut Pro 7 which includes an enhanced ProRes codecs. ProRes Proxy is a new low-bandwidth codec for editing content on a laptop, ProRes LT for general purpose editing, and ProRes 4444 for maximum video quality. The new Easy Export allows editors to keep working on their projects while encoding in the background. iChat Theater incorporates the Final Cut timeline or clips into iChat for video collaboration, even if the user on the other side doesn't have Final Cut Pro. Finally, the editor adds native support for AVC-Intra on newer Panasonic cameras.

Motion 4 is the 3D animation component, and this version for offers new customizable features for lighting with dynamic shadows, reflections, and spotlights. Users can also easily create depth of field and create a racking focus effect.

Soundtrack Pro 3 is an advanced audio editing program. New to version 3 is a sound level matching, allow editors to match levels across multiple clips. Also new is an enhanced file editor for new tools for editing and fine tune volume adjustments. Also new is an Advanced Time Stretch feature to precisely stretch and compress audio clips.

Color 1.5 adds native support for RED ONE cameras, and also support for AVC-Intra, XDCAM 422, and ProRes 4444.

Compressor 3.5 adds drag and drop support for preset actions. Also added are sharing options for YouTube and MobileMe, and also exports for the iPhone, iPod, and Apple TV. The update also includes presets for Blu-ray.

DVD Studio remains at version 4.

Final Cut Studio is available now for $999 That's $300 less than the previous release. Upgrades are available for $299.
