"Virtually sold-out." That's the report USA Today is carrying about Apple's newly-minted iPod Mini iPM). One retailer quoted by USA today described the iPM as a "phenomenon", remarking he had never seen a product sell as quickly as this. Apple had pre-orders for 100,000 of the new music player, despite some doubts regarding its pricing, particularly as, at $249, it was a mere $50 cheaper than its larger but roomier 15GB iPod sibling. However, Apple has proven the pundits wrong once again, as the iPM has proven a smash hit. Apple said that there could be 1-3 week wait on the iPM. Quoting Apple marketing VP Greg Joswiak, the article says that there is no component supply problem - the company simply can't produce them quickly enough. Last week, a Merrill Lynch analyst predicted that the iPod could become a $1 billion business for Apple, rising to $2 billion by 2006-07. But the iPM isn't the only player selling: the Creative MuVo2, which also has 4GB of storage and costs $199, sold more than 500 units at one retailer. Analysis: Your humble(d) reporter never thought the iPM wouldn't be a huge hit, but did express doubts over the price. The colors...well, women like 'em apparently, according to some market data that came up last week. The question is whether Apple can sustain this momentum in the face of stiff competition, or whether this is merely the 'early adopter' phase. So long as Apple sells zillions of them, I'll be happy to be wrong all the time.
